Fresh, brisk and focussed / Album “Bac de Roda”
Five years have passed since their last release, “Grip”, but Songs from Utopia have not been idle since then. “We’ve covered thousands of kilometers and often performed at festivals,” says drummer Jura Dolezal. A clear indication that the experienced duo is far from having had enough and want to continue developing – not least through concert appearances. “These are and will remain our centrepiece,” says Dolezal.
Band founder, songwriter and singer Rebekka Zarkava is convinced that the new songs have matured and have more soul music. Combined with their flair for surf sounds, rockabilly and roots music, the band’s latest album, “Bac de Roda”, is correspondingly fresh, brisk and focussed. When asked about current influences, the musicians mention the Ugandan-British songwriter Michael Kiwanuka and, in particular, the work of the US-American Black Pumas, who mix funk with soul and latin. Both of these influences reflect Songs from Utopia’s turn towards soul.
Zarkava and Dolezal recorded the eleven tracks, which primarily rely on guitar, vocals and drums, in Barcelona – in the renowned “Sol de Sants” studios with the sound engineer Alberto Pérez. “We were thrilled that he knows his way around both the old and the modern world of sound,” enthuses Zarkava. The collaboration was as efficient as it was effective: “We wanted us to sound the same on the album as we do on stage,” explains the artist. That’s why the sparsely arranged songs were mostly recorded live.
The result is songs such as the hypnotic, sparkling “Lia mon IA” or the sensual “Wild Love”, which lives up to its title. Black Cloud”, which combines surf sounds with post-punk, also impresses with pressure, drive and unrelenting dynamics. Songs from Utopia succeed in creating mysterious music that entices you to listen, dance and lose yourself. What’s more, the duo really do know how to tell a story: sometimes their songs, characterised by space and tranquillity, are about the connection with extraterrestrials or a new ruler of the world, sometimes about a smart wolf or the crazy end of a love affair.
All reasons to lend your ear and your dancing legs to the new work by Songs from Utopia. To experience all the facets of “Bac de Roda” for yourself, you should definitely listen to the album out loud. It’s a brilliant experience – that’s a promise.
Frisch, forsch und fokussiert / Album “Bac de Roda”
Seit ihrer letzten Veröffentlichung, «Grip», sind fünf Jahre vergangen, doch untätig waren Songs from Utopia seither nicht, ganz im Gegenteil. «Wir haben Tausende Kilometer absolviert und sind oft an Festivals aufgetreten», weiss Schlagzeuger Jura Dolezal. Ein deutlicher Hinweis darauf, dass das erfahrene Duo noch lange nicht genug hat und sich stetig weiterentwickeln will – nicht zuletzt mittels Konzertauftritten. «Diese sind und bleiben unser Nährboden», so Dolezal.
Bandgründerin, Songwriterin und Sängerin Rebekka Zarkava ist überzeugt, dass die neuen Songs ein gutes Stück reifer geworden sind und mehr Soul an den Tag legen. Kombiniert mit ihrem Flair für Surf-Sounds, Rockabilly und Roots-Musik zeigt sich die Band auf ihrem neusten Album, «Bac de Roda», entsprechend frisch, forsch und fokussiert. Auf die Frage nach aktuellen Einflüssen nennen die Musikschaffenden nebst dem ugandisch-britischen Songwriter Michael Kiwanuka insbesondere das Werk der US-amerikanischen Black Pumas, die Funk mit Soul und Latin vermengen. Beides lässt die spür- und hörbare Hinwendung von Songs from Utopia zum Soul nachvollziehen und schätzen.
Eingespielt haben Zarkava und Dolezal die elf Tracks, die vornehmlich auf Gitarre, Gesang und Drums setzen, in Barcelona – in den renommierten «Sol de Sants»-Studios mit dem Sound Engineer Alberto Pérez. «Begeistert hat uns, dass er sowohl in der alten als auch der modernen Klangwelt zuhause ist», schwärmt Zarkava. Die Zusammenarbeit war ebenso effizient wie effektiv: «Wir wollten, dass wir auf dem Album so klingen wie auf der Bühne», erklärt die Künstlerin. Deshalb wurden die sparsam arrangierten Songs mehrheitlich live eingespielt.
Das Ergebnis sind Lieder wie das hypnotisch perlende «Lia mon IA» oder das sinnliche «Wild Love», das seinem Titel alle Ehre macht. Auch «Black Cloud», welches Surfsounds mit Post-Punk verknüpft, überzeugt mit Druck, Drive und unablässiger Dynamik. Songs from Utopia gelingt es, geheimnisvolle Musik zu kreieren, die zum Zuhören, zum Tanzen und sich Verlieren verführt. Hinzu kommt, dass das Duo in der Tat etwas zu erzählen weiss: Mal handeln ihre von Raum und Ruhe geprägten Stücke von der Verbundenheit mit Ausserirdischen oder einer neuen Herrscherin über die Welt, mal von einem smarten Wolf oder dem verrückten Ende einer Liebe.
Alles gewichtige Gründe, um dem neuen Werk von Songs from Utopia sein Ohr und seine Tanzbeine zu leihen. Um sämtliche Facetten von «Bac de Roda» am eigenen Leib zu erleben, sollte man das Album übrigens unbedingt laut anhören. Es ist eine fulminante Erfahrung – versprochen.
Svěží, svižné a soustředěné / Album “Bac de Roda”
Od vydání předchozího alba “Grip” uplynulo pět let, ale Songs from Utopia od té doby nezaháleli, ba naopak. “Najezdili jsme tisíce kilometrů a často vystupovali na festivalech,” říká bubeník Jura Doležal. Jasný důkaz toho, že zkušené duo ještě zdaleka nemá dost a chce se dál rozvíjet – nejen prostřednictvím koncertních vystoupení. “Ty jsou a zůstanou naší živnou půdou,” říká Doležal.
Zakladatelka kapely, skladatelka a zpěvačka Rebekka Zarkava je přesvědčena, že nové songy jsou mnohem vyzrálejší a mají v sobě více duše. V kombinaci s citem pro surfový zvuk, rockabilly a roots music je nové album kapely “Bac de Roda” odpovídajícím způsobem svěží, rázné a soustředěné. Na otázku po současných vlivech hudebníci zmiňují ugandsko-britského písničkáře Michaela Kiwanuku a zejména tvorbu US-amerických Black Pumas, kteří mísí funk se soulem a latinskoamerickými prvky. Oba tyto vlivy umožňují pochopit a ocenit hmatatelný a slyšitelný obrat Songs from Utopia k soulu.
Jedenáct skladeb, které se opírají především o kytaru, zpěv a bicí, nahráli Zarkava a Doležal v Barceloně – v renomovaném studiu “Sol de Sants” společně se zvukovým inženýrem Albertem Pérezem. “Byli jsme nadšeni, že je doma jak ve starém, tak v moderním světě zvuku,” libuje si Zarkava. Spolupráce byla stejně efektivní jako účelná: “Chtěli jsme, abychom na albu zněli stejně jako na pódiu,” vysvětluje umělkyně. Proto byly střídmě aranžované písně z větší části nahrány naživo.
Výsledkem jsou songy jako hypnotická, jiskřivá “Lia mon IA” nebo cituplná “Wild Love”, která odpovídá svému titulu. Tlakem, drivem a neutuchající dynamikou zaujme song “Black Cloud”, který kombinuje surfový zvuk s post-punkem. Songs from Utopia se daří vytvářet tajemnou hudbu, která láká k poslechu, tanci a ke ztracení se. Navíc duo opravdu umí vyprávět příběhy: někdy jsou jejich písně, charakteristické prostorem a klidem, o spojení s mimozemšťany nebo o novém vládci světa, jindy o chytrém vlkovi nebo o šíleném konci milostného vztahu.
To všechno jsou pádné důvody pro to, abyste novému dílu Songs from Utopia propůjčili své uši a roztančené nohy. Abyste si všechny aspekty “Bac de Roda” vyzkoušeli na vlastní kůži, měli byste si album rozhodně poslechnout nahlas. Je to brilantní zážitek – to můžeme slíbit.
